The BCC Women’s Group was formed in April 2005 to identify and implement projects of interest to women. BCC Women’s Group continues to provide assistance, support, guidance and resources in several areas including career and professional development, health related issues, legal issues, emotional support, social and cultural activities, and volunteer opportunities. Since its inception, BCC Women’s Group has undertaken many activities including:
• Group discussions/seminars, presentations by guest speakers/experts to discuss relevant issues (every other month);
• Classes/workshops;
• Book club;
• Socio-Cultural events;
• Food drive at local shelters;
• Gift drives for the needy
• Coordinate with other BTI/BCC committees to plan/organize various programs.
BCC Women’s Group has been operating over the last few years and has successfully performed many functions for both the Temple community and the community at large. A Speaker's Forum held bi-monthly has addressed many topics of interest such as Women and Depression, Eating Healthy, Training Session and Workshop by a Life Coach, Teenagers and Peer Pressure, Aging and the Stress of Caregiving, Writing workshop, Yoga workshop focused on “hindrances of the mind” and many others.
BCC Women’s Group holds a book club group every other month. We discuss books by South Asian authors or with a South Asian focus which provide a point of departure for discussions on a variety of topics.
Community outreach is another function undertaken by the BCC Women’s Group. Our members have assisted the Sisters of Charity mission in Norristown in cooking for and serving food to the homeless. Providing Christmas cheer to the abused and neglected children of St. Mary's Villa in Ambler is another major effort. This effort was organized by the Women’s Group with the support of many members of our Temple who responded to the call for donations. We have also organized a Book Fair for St. Mary's Villa and provided books to each of 80 children in the facility. BCC Women’s Group has organized a Winter Coat Drive during the Ganesh Festival.
BCC Women’s Group celebrates the festival of Karva Chauth each fall, with the traditional “Katha” in the Temple, and festive activities such as Mehendi, refreshments, games etc. in the BCC hall. We also enjoy social events together such as group outings and film viewing.
Not only women, but the entire Temple family is enriched through the activities of BCC Women’s Group. We wish to offer a place for women in the community to interact, network, share ideas and participate in a variety of activities, and an opportunity to meet others with similar interests. No formal membership is required. All of the Women’s Group activities are free and everyone is welcome to come and participate as and when they can.
BCC Women’s Group is actively seeking volunteers to help us plan and organize more activities of interest to women and families. For more information, please contact:
